Science

“Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.”
- Edwin Hubble

Intent

At Weetwood, our high-quality science curriculum encourages children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Science is all around us and, through cross-curricular links, our pupils develop an understanding of scientific break-throughs and how this affects their own life. Our pupils are encouraged to think for themselves, making relevant observations about what they have seen and posing interesting questions to investigate.

Implementation

A well-planned science curriculum is critical in ensuring children develop and enhance their scientific understanding, building on what they have learnt in previous years. We teach specific scientific vocabulary and expect children to use this accurately when talking about and explaining concepts. At Weetwood, all children from years 1-6 have weekly science lessons, which over the years; will cover all three aspects of science - Biology, Physics and Chemistry. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are developed through the planning of investigations so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

We have a well-stocked bank of resources to allow regular practical, hands on science within the classroom and regularly use the natural environment in our school grounds and nearby locations to investigate.

Impact

Pupils at Weetwood are equipped with the knowledge and skills to build upon in their next stage of learning and beyond. In a quickly changing world, our pupils can make links within topics and across the curriculum as a whole, realising that many career paths they choose will require a solid grasp of STEM. Our pupils can name, recognise and discuss the scientific break-through and study of a wide range of scientists and engineers, understanding that their work built upon those who came before them and its impact on our world today and in the future.
